Bach incorporated many of his stylistic forms into the B Minor Mass: fugues, dances, vocal and instrumental solos, chant, and more. There is one form missing, however, and that is the chorale. In his cantatas and passions, there were usually harmonized hymns—often versions of original tunes by Martin Luther—for the congregation to sing, or at the very least recognize. There are no such moments in the mass. In the spirit of opening up this piece to the masses, so to speak, we are inviting you to join us for the final movement (no pressure!). This movement appears earlier in the work with the text “Gratias Agimus Tibi,” so you’ll have a chance to hear it first. When it comes around at the end, follow along as you’re able in this most stunning call for peace.

Music will be in your program book, but if want to plan ahead, you can view it here. Additionally, here are some resources to work on the notes if you’re feeling industrious.
