The Bach B minor Mass
Johann Sebastian Bach
Performance Practices of Bach
While many believe Bach compiled the Mass in B Minor as a "summation" of his life’s work—synthesizing decades of styles (from stile antico to contemporaneous operatic forms) into an "encyclopedia" of sacred music—it has come to be viewed by many as the greatest single work in the choral repertoire.
Scholars have been discussing for decades the most appropriate performance practices for the music of Bach, and, in particular, the great B Minor Mass. At one end of the spectrum, scholars like Joshua Rifkin have argued for "one voice on a part." On the other, choral societies and modern orchestras from the 19th century to the present day have gathered hundreds to bring the majesty and power of the work to life. In the middle lies a third approach: a chamber-sized choir with Baroque tuning and period instruments, emphasizing clarity of texture and historical research.
This spring, DC audiences have the opportunity to experience two of these approaches—hearing the great work from multiple musical points of view. On April 25, the Washington Bach Consort will present the Mass with a small vocal ensemble and period instruments. On May 31, the City Choir of Washington will feature its chorus of 150 and an orchestra with modern instruments.
City Choir and the Bach Consort believe that both of these approaches have validity, and we want to encourage you to listen to this monumental work in both performance styles. As a result, we are offering a 50% discount for the "other" performance once you buy a ticket for the first.
Washington Bach Consort: Saturday, April 25, 4:00 pm | National Presbyterian Church
